Ethernet Guidelines - Glennstar Apartments

Dear resident,

This is a brief overview of the Internet service provided. It is imperative that you read and follow these instructions. We appreciate your cooperation to help avoid service interruptions for all.

General Information:

Internet service at GlennStar is provided through a private wireless system. There is one wireless router to service the complex. The incoming Business Service passes from the modem to a wireless router/firewall (which hands out IP addresses).

Accessing the Internet:

A Wireless Network Adaptor is required in order to establish an Internet Connection. There are many types of wireless adaptors that can be used, including the following.

If you are using a Laptop and you don’t have an internal Wireless Adapter, you need to purchase a PCMCIA Wireless Adapter such as the D-Link DWL-650+ PCMCIA network card. This card will look similar to the following picture.

If you are using a Desktop or tower computer, then you can purchase either a USB or PCI Wireless Network Adaptor. The PCI adapter will look like or similar to the DWL-520+ PCI card pictured.

You may purchase these cards at any computer or office solutions store or by calling TCR Solutions at 574-1935 who can also install and configure the cards for you.

The wireless Internet signal is encrypted. The encryption code that needs to be entered to access the WE3Glenn signal. Contact the office if you need the code.

(The first digit is a zero and the alpha characters are lower case.)

Should your wireless card require additional entries:

Profile Name: (whatever you want)
Network type: Open Network
Transfer Rate: 11 megabytes
Authentification Mode: Auto
Encryption Bytes: WEP
Input Method: Key 1 or Manual

Your computer should be set to automatically receive a dynamic IP address.

Should you have any issues connecting to the internet, please see the “Troubleshooting Tips” attached. On occasion following an Internet or power outage, you may experience difficulty reconnecting to the Internet. This sheet also contains helpful information for those circumstances. Please consult this guide and exhaust all recommendations before calling the office.

Virus & Spyware Issues:

As a condition of using the wireless Ethernet system, you are required to have and maintain Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware. This software should be set for daily automatic updates as well as scheduled for daily scans. Your failure to do so could cause significant problems. Should a virus or other unwanted program find its way on to your computer, it can send out spam, eat up bandwidth and create other issues. If we detect a problem, service to your house will be disconnected from our system. Our service provider requires that we maintain vigilance on this issue, or they will terminate service to the entire system. Should a problem arise, you may be charged the cost to diagnose the problem and a fee to be reconnected to the system once the issues are rectified.

Getting your own ISP:

Should the wireless Internet service provided not be sufficient for your needs you may consider obtaining your own Internet Service.

Getting Your Own ISP (Internet Service Provider)

Your new modem may only be located and installed in the living room or one of the bedrooms. Important:

  • Exterior antenna or wiring is strictly prohibited.
  • Do not change any cabling.
  • Your modem should be connected to your “DSL” or “Cable” ISP provider with the appropriate cable. If you plan to use this service with more than one computer you will require a router (either hard wire or wireless).
    • From the modem, connect to the “WAN” or “Internet” port of the router. If you are using a wireless router, this will provide wireless service.
  • The typical installation is shown in the diagram below.
