StoneWood Ethernet Guidlines

Dear resident,

This is a brief overview of the Internet service provided.  It is imperative that you read and follow these instructions.  We appreciate your cooperation to help avoid service interruptions for all.

General Information:
Internet service at Stonewood is provided through a private Ethernet system.  There are three incoming feeds that each serve two buildings.  The incoming Business Service passes from the modem to a router/firewall (which hands out IP addresses) and then through a managed switch for distribution to each apartment.  Inside each apartment there is an eight port switch/hub that distributes service to the “Data Ports” located in the living room and each bedroom.  This switch/hub is located in the utility closet above the water heater.  This switch/hub and cabling should not be altered under any circumstances.

Accessing the Internet:
To use our Ethernet you simply need to plug an Ethernet cable from your computer into one of the “Data Ports” located in the living room and each bedroom.  Your computer should be set to automatically receive a dynamic IP address.

Should you have any issues connecting to the internet, please see the “Troubleshooting Tips” attached.  On occasion following an Internet or power outage, you may experience difficulty reconnecting to the Internet.  This sheet also contains helpful information for those circumstances.  Please consult this guide and exhaust all recommendations before calling the office.

Virus & Spyware Issues:
As a condition of using our Ethernet system, you are required to have and maintain Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware.  This software should be set for daily automatic updates as well as scheduled for daily scans.  Your failure to do so could cause significant problems.  Should a virus or other unwanted program find its way on to your computer, it can send out spam, eat up bandwidth and create other issues.  If we detect a problem, service to your house will be disconnected from our system.  Our service provider requires that we maintain vigilance on this issue, or they will terminate service to the entire system.  Should a problem arise, you may be charged the cost to diagnose the problem and a fee to be reconnected to the system once the issues are rectified.

Adding a Wireless Router:
Should you desire to add a wireless router, it is mandatory to first notify management and then precisely follow the attached instructions.   Failure to do so can create IP conflicts and interrupt service for your neighbors.  Should problems arise from the addition of equipment in your home, you will be charged all costs to diagnose and correct the problem(s).

Getting your own ISP:
Should you desire to obtain your own Internet Service Provider, you must first notify management, so that we can disconnect you from our system.  Failure to do so can create IP conflicts and interrupt service for your neighbors.  Keep in mind that exterior antenna or wiring, as well as any alteration to our Ethernet system and cabling is strictly prohibited.  Should problems arise to our system due your obtaining your own ISP or failure to follow these instructions, you will be charged all costs to diagnose and correct the problem(s).

If Anything Happens:
It is important that all residents read and follow these guidelines.  Your failure to do so could cause an interruption of service to some or all of the residents at the complex.  Should such a problem occur as a result of something you added/installed or your failure to follow these guidelines, you will be charged to diagnose and correct the problem at a rate not less than $100.00 per hour ($100.00 minimum charge).  This can be avoided by simply asking questions before you install.

Troubleshooting Tips

  • Run Virus Software and Spyware scans and keep current on a daily basis.
  • When Internet service seems to slow down – restart computer.
  • When the Internet service goes down for any reason it may be necessary to power cycle all computers, the switch (located in the telecom panel in the closet under the stairs) and wireless router (if applicable).
    • Turn all computers off.
    • Pull the power cord from the back of the switch, wait 10 seconds and reconnect.
    • Pull the power cord from the back of the wireless router (if applicable), wait 10 seconds and reconnect.
    • Restart all computers.
  • If there is a power outage or other type of interruption it may be necessary to renew the IP address for your computer.  To renew the IP address:
    • Click Start
    • Click Run
    • Type CMD and choose OK
    • Type IPCONFIG /RELEASE     hit enter
    • Type IPCONFIG /RENEW        hit enter
    • Type EXIT
  • If using a wireless router and there still is no Internet service, pull the power cord from the back of your wireless router for 5 minutes and then reconnect the power cord to the back.  This will cause your router to search for new IP addresses.
  • When your computer does not get Internet Service but all other computers in the house do:
    • Plug your computer into a “Data Port” that you know is getting Internet service.  If your computer still is not getting service then there is likely an issue going on with your computer.
    • If your computer does get Internet service at the other outlet, please contact the rental office to check out the Ethernet outlet in your room.
  • After completing the above troubleshooting and no one in the house is receiving Internet service, please call the rental office.

Adding a Wireless Router

Should you wish to add a wireless router, please be sure to:

  1. Notify management before you add a router or any other device to our Ethernet system.
  2. Follow these instructions carefully and completely.
  3. If you are unsure of what you are doing, ask questions first and/or obtain professional assistance to avoid causing problems on the system.

A wireless router may only be installed and connected to one of the Data Ports located in the living room and each bedroom.  Important:

  • Do not install your wireless router ahead of the Ethernet switch in your unit.
  • Do not change or alter the connections of the Ethernet switch or any cabling.
  • Your wireless router should be connected using a Cat5 Ethernet cable from one of the “Data Ports” in the house to the port labeled “WAN” or “Internet” on your router.  Do not connect it to a “LAN” port.
  • Should you wish to connect a computer(s) via hardwire to your wireless router, they should be connected to one of the “LAN” ports.
  • Consult the diagram below.

Getting Your Own ISP (Internet Service Provider)

Should you wish to obtain your own ISP, please be sure to:

  1. Notify management before you switch to another ISP or adding any other device to our Ethernet system.  We must disconnect your home from our Ethernet prior to installation of your new ISP.  Failure to do so may cause serious problems with our system and interrupt service to our other residents.
  2. Follow these instructions carefully and completely.
  3. If you are unsure of what you are doing, ask questions first and/or obtain professional assistance to avoid causing problems on the system.

Your new modem may only be located and installed in the living room or one of the bedrooms.  Important:

  • Exterior antenna or wiring is strictly prohibited.
  • Do not install your modem ahead of the Ethernet switch in your unit.
  • Do not change or alter the connections of the Ethernet switch or any cabling.
  • Your modem should be connected to your “DSL” or “Cable” ISP provider with the appropriate cable.   If you plan to use this service with more than one computer you will require a router (either hard wire or wireless).
    • From the modem, connect to the “WAN” or “Internet” port of the router.  If you are using a wireless router, this will provide wireless service.
    • If you wish to use the internal cabling in the house to distribute service to computers in other rooms, connect a Cat5 Ethernet cable from one of the “LAN” ports of the router to the “Data Port” in the wall.  This will back feed the switch and allow your router to hand out IP addresses and distribute service.
    • Should you want to connect a desktop in the same room using a hard wire connection, this too should be connected to one of the “LAN” ports on the router.
  • The typical installation is shown in the diagram below.
